The police force in the state of New South Wales (NSW) said in a statement on Monday that emergency services were called to reports of a shooting at a home in Penrith, about 50 km west of the Sydney central business district, at around 11:45 p.m. local time on Sunday.
Officers arrived at the scene and were told that three men had broken into the home before shooting a 26-year-old male in the leg and leaving the scene.
The victim was treated by ambulance paramedics and taken to the hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Police have established a crime scene and asked members of the public with dashcam footage from the area to come forward.
